Many of my friends and readers have been in the the CE/BME professional for as long, or longer, than I have. Many are new entries into the field. For me, personally, I can't think of a better, more forfilling professional business to be in... thinkd about it..cool technology (fyi, I got into electronics as a kid, building Heathkit ham radios); medical; business, all integreated into a profession that helps people!
As a clinical engineering consultant, I truely enjoy assisting hosptial based CE programs expand. Unfortunately, unless it is run as a buisiness, this isn't always possible. Marketing; patient safety; cost of service benchmarking and having an eye for new business opportinities are all areas where the astute clinical engineering program manger needs to continuously focus efforts on. MTM, Inc.'s focus has always been on growth, development and cost justification of the the in-house clinical engineerng program model. No offense intended to those working for out-sourced CE progams!
On another front, everyone I know in the BME/CE profession is looking for additional income opportunities. Currently, I support and promote two opportunities.. one for those interested in personal telecommuncation, the other for those interested in a personal health and wellness technology (i.e., if you are overweight, feel stressed ir tired, or have friends and/or colleges that are, this may be for you!)
